Hernia Surgery

Hernias are fairly common medical problems that can cause pain and other symptoms. In very rare instances, they can be life-threatening.

Hernias can be easily addressed through hernia repair surgery, one of the most regularly performed surgical procedures in the United States.

The Benefits of Hernia Repair

Eliminate a Bulge

Hernias are usually detected because they result in noticeable bulges around the abdomen or groin. Surgery involves pushing the organ or tissue back into place, eliminating the lump.

Relieve Pain

Hernias can be tender to the touch and cause severe discomfort while performing normal daily activities. Visiting our Plano surgical center is essential for alleviating discomfort and improving your quality of life.

Reduce Chance of Complications

While hernias are relatively benign at first, they can lead to serious issues in the future, such as intestinal incarceration or bowel obstruction, which can be life-threatening. Reducing these risks is the primary reason doctors usually recommend having hernias surgically repaired.

What Is a Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue pushes through a hole or weak point in the surrounding muscle or tissue. There are several types, but they all occur in the abdomen or groin areas. Hernias are not always easy to detect, and sometimes you may not realize you have one until a doctor finds it during a routine physical.

In many cases, hernias do not have symptoms, and at first, they may not affect your life at all. While you can live with the condition untreated for some time, it is important to have the issue repaired before more serious health issues develop. The only effective method of hernia repair is surgery.

Hernia repair surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures in the country, with hundreds of thousands of cases being handled safely and efficiently by surgeons every year. In recent years, advances in surgical technology have made hernia surgery safer and less invasive than ever before. At the Texas Center for Bariatrics & Advanced Surgery in Plano, Dr. Cribbins employs advanced laparoscopic and robotic methods to expertly treat abdominal and inguinal/groin hernias.

A Hernia Patient's Story How Our Team Makes a Difference

"I had the best experience one can have while having to undergo an operation. Dr. Cribbins and all of his staff were incredibly warm, friendly, supportive, and helpful throughout my entire process. I felt like each person I talked with at Dr. Cribbins' office truly cared about my well being and worked to make my experience pleasant and smooth.

I had an open hernia repair. My incision looks amazing. I had hardly any post-operative pain, and the recovery was easier than I expected. I cannot recommend Dr. Cribbins enough."

Types of Hernias

Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal Hernia

In an inguinal hernia, the intestines or bladder break through the abdominal wall and enter the inguinal canal in the groin.

Incisional Hernia

Incisional Hernia

Incisional hernias occur because muscles or tissues are weakened by incisions made during previous surgeries.

Ventral Hernia

Ventral Hernia

Ventral hernias occur when organs break through any part of the abdominal muscle. Ventral hernias are often also incisional hernias.

Hiatal Hernia

Hiatal Hernia

Hiatal hernias occur when the upper portion of the stomach protrudes through an opening in a person's diaphragm.

Umbilical Hernia

Umbilical Hernia

An umbilical hernia occurs when the intestines cause a bulge in the abdomen near the belly button.

While most hernias only cause mild pain, if any, the discomfort can worsen during certain activities, such as heaving lifting.

Anesthesia

The first step of the surgical process is to administer anesthesia. Different anesthetic options are available depending on the location and type of hernia. We will make sedation recommendations that help eliminate anxiety and discomfort during the procedure.

Incisions

Dr. Cribbins will make three to five small incisions in the area around the bulge or lump. These small incisions are placed so all laparoscopic tools can be inserted and manipulated with ease.

Da Vinci Camera

Dr. Cribbins will insert a camera into one of the incisions. The camera is a surgical tool with a camera and light at the end. The allows the doctor to see the inside of your body during the surgery, eliminating the need for large incisions and open surgery.

Abdomen Inflation

For abdominal hernias, the surgeon will pump a harmless gas into your abdominal cavity to create more space in which to maneuver. This ensures the hernia repair surgery is as minimally invasive as possible, only affecting necessary organs and tissues.

Hernia Repair

Other surgical tools are inserted through the small incisions as needed. Guided by the camera, Dr. Cribbins will push the organ or tissue back into place. He will then repair the compromised muscle, usually with a surgical mesh. The tools are removed and the incisions are closed.
