The doctors at the Texas Center for Obesity Surgery provide a non-surgical weight loss option, the Obalon weight loss stomach balloon, to their patients in the Plano, Frisco, Dallas and Fort Worth metropolitan area.
What is the weight loss stomach balloon?
The swallowable weight loss stomach balloon pill by Obalon is a stomach (intragastric) balloon system indicated for temporary use to facilitate weight loss in adults with obesity (BMI of 30 – 40 kg/m2) who have failed to lose weight through diet and exercise. Dr. Joe Cribbins and Dr.Keli McCalman from the Texas Center for Obesity Surgery offer this first and only swallowable, FDA-approved 3-balloon system for weight loss.
The Obalon Balloon System is intended to be used as add-on to a moderate intensity diet and behavior modification program. All balloons must be removed 6 months after the first balloon is placed.
Weight Loss Balloon Pill
The Obalon Balloon System is an innovative, FDA approved weight loss stomach balloon program available in the Plano/Frisco area which utilizes swallowable capsules to place 3 lightweight balloons in the stomach over a three-month period. Once the weight loss balloon pill is swallowed, your physician will inflate the balloon with gas during a non-surgical process that takes about 10 minutes. Each balloon weighs approximately 3 grams (less than the weight of a penny) and has a volume of 250cc, or approximately the size of a small orange.
The weight loss balloons, which are ingested one at a time approximately a month apart, stay in the stomach for no more than 6 months from the insertion of the first balloon. At that time, all the weight loss balloons are removed during a short endoscopic procedure under light, conscious sedation. During the 6-month period, the weight loss balloons are in the stomach occupying space (750cc total volume) enabling the patient to eat less and lose weight.
The Obalon Balloon System is designed to be a catalyst for lifestyle modification and used in conjunction with a moderate exercise program and professionally supervised diet plan.

How Much Weight Can I Lose with the Obalon Weight Loss Balloon?
Patients who use the Obalon Weight Loss Balloon System lose approximately 30% of their excess weight during the 6-month period that the balloons are in place. Successful weight loss also depends on the patient’s readiness to develop and maintain new behavioral and lifestyle skills. Behavior modification after weight loss balloon removal is essential to maintain healthy weight loss.
A clinical study found that Obalon patients who practiced a healthy diet and exercise program lost twice as much weight as people who engaged in diet and exercise alone. Furthermore, Obalon users maintained 89% of their total weight loss after one year of beginning the balloon weight loss system.
Recovery Time After Obalon Weight Loss Balloon Placement
Most patients who receive the Obalon Balloon System for weight loss require no recovery time and are able to return to work or resume daily activities upon leaving the doctor’s office. Since no sedation is required, patients are able to drive themselves after balloon placement, as well.
How Much Does a Weight Loss Balloon Cost?
The Obalon Balloon System includes the 3 balloon insertions and removal, as well as extensive nutritional support. The average cost for the 6-month treatment ranges from $6,000 to $9,000, and financing options are available to help patients reach their weight loss goals.
