Keli J. McCalman, DO – Biography
When Dr. Keli J. McCalman takes off her white coat, she goes home to a husband and two children who know her as the warm, compassionate wife and mother she is.
But when Dr. McCalman is counseling patients, evaluating a case or performing precise and exacting surgery, she exhibits professional expertise that earns her the trust of her patients and the respect of her peers.
In choosing a physician and surgeon, patients want to know
- Does the doctor have the training and experience?
- How do her colleagues feel about her?
- Will the doctor explain procedures and relate to me as a person?
Dr. McCalman welcomes the opportunity to address those concerns with her patients.
Training and Experience
A Texas native, Dr. McCalman began preparing for excellence in surgery by graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2003. She went on to earn her degree in Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 2007 from the University of North Texas Health Science Center/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Then Dr. McCalman’s education in her specialty – surgery – began in earnest. Dr. McCalman completed her General Surgery Internship and Residency through the Michigan State program at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills.
In 2012, she accepted a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery with the prestigious Dr. Karl LeBlanc at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Completing this intensive training, Dr. McCalman joined a practice in Beaumont, Texas, during which time she was asked to serve as Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas. She created a Bariatric Committee at the hospital and was recognized by her peers by being awarded the distinction of Comprehensive Bariatric Center (formerly known as a Center of Excellence) designation by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgical Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) in 2015.
When the non-medical community voted in 2016, Dr. McCalman was chosen “Best Bariatrics” in a readers’ poll by the Beaumont Enterprise.
In 2017 Dr. McCalman embraced the opportunity to join the Texas Center for Obesity and General Surgery in Plano, which enabled her to return to the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex where she spent her childhood.
Relationship with Patients
“There is nothing more important than doing everything we can to make the most of the life we’ve been given,” Dr. McCalman says. “Helping others achieve their greatest potential is rewarding to me, personally and professionally, and that involves developing relationships with my patients that make them comfortable and keeps them informed about their treatment from beginning to end.
“I love seeing the journey a patient makes through their treatment process. It is exciting to see them meet or surpass the goals they have set for themselves.”
Dr. McCalman, her husband Dave and their two children revel in outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, scuba diving and hiking. They keep the grill sizzling, read together and enjoy relaxing with their extended family and friends.
